Christmas Back in Long Beach

It was strange being back at home but nice seeing neighbors and friends.

Time to Visit Santa Again!

Anneliese wasn't too thrilled to meet Santa.  Ethan was very nice and passed along her wish list on her behalf.  Santa did think that a remote control helicopter might be a bit much for her though.

Anneliese in response to Ethan saying he wants a remote control monster truck for Christmas:

"Well, I want a big, pink, princess monster truck!" --Anneliese

Family (Less Daddy) Visits Oma & Opa

Liz and the kids went to go visit Oma and Opa leaving Daddy to cram for finals alone.  From the photos, it looked noticeably less sunny than it did in August.

Grandma, John and Butterflies

Grandma and John visited Monterey where they showed us a new way to have fun at the beach (see below).  We also went to the Monarch Grove Sanctuary in Pacific Grove as it was getting to the time of year when they are all hanging out in the trees there.  It was pretty neat seeing how clumped together they were trying to stay warm.

Big Sur Half and Run Forrest Run 5k

Liz ran her second half marathon, the Big Sur Half Marathon, while I went for the more palatable Run Forrest Run 5k.

Halloween

Ethan has really gotten into playing the Monopoly Deal card game which I had heard about from a lady at church a while back. Anneliese is turning into such a fun talker.  She's always asking questions and then saying "You're right" and uses lots of double plurals. Halloween was a real mission this year with the monkey and Optimus Prime trick-or-treating at not one but two Pre-Halloween shopping area sessions and a party at NPS prior to spending actual Halloween around a military housing area that my classmate invited us to.  I've never in my life seen anything like it...it seemed like the set of a movie like E.T. with so many houses decorated and kids on the street and even the people handing out candy were in costume sitting on their porches.

Family Arrives

The family arrived and I introduced the kids to their new room that I had decked out beforehand to get them excited.  The kids were sporting fresh haircuts...Anneliese's being unplanned.  I had gotten word a few days prior to arrival that Ethan had deliberately cut a 4" section of Anneliese's hair off.  Liz didn't even know about it until one of the stylists during Ethan's haircut took notice.  We took our first trip to Dennis the Menace park which the kids loved.

A New Home and a New Blog

I've made the move to our furnished condo in Monterey and the view from our master bedroom is pretty darn nice.  The family is still back home getting their lives organized but will join me in a few weeks.  To document my experience over the coming year, I'll have a new blog titled A Year at NPS with all the happenings both at school and with the family in Monterey.

Free Cruise Around the Port of Long Beach

The family signed up for a free cruise of the Port of Long Beach because I thought it would be need to see some of the huge cargo ships up close.  The cruises are run by the port to show how they are being environmentally friendly.  The sun didn't break until we were heading back to shore but it was still a good time.

Liz Does Disney Half-Marathon

Liz ran the Disneyland Half Marathon and the kids and I zoomed around town to see her run through Angel's Stadium before meeting her at the finish at Disneyland.  Liz could not fathom how some people were going to spend the rest of the day in the park after running.

Walking with Dinosaurs!

Everyone except Anneliese went to go see the Walking with Dinosaurs show at the Anaheim Pond.  It was a darn impressive show.  We all jumped in our seats when a T-Rex broke his silence after staring down audience members with an incredibly loud roar.  It was hard sell convincing Ethan to get a 3-D poster instead of some lame trinket as memorabilia but I pulled it off.

Communal Sand Pit

We finally got the city to fix our sewer mainline which needed roots taken out every year. However, they seemingly forgot to pass the word on to the sidewalk/lawn repair folks so for weeks we've had this community sandbox in our front yard where the neighborhood kids come dig.

Local Fun in Lowell, MI

We went to visit Oma and Opa in Michigan and had fun swimming in a local lake, collecting bugs, and going to the Lowell County Fair and Rodeo.  The rodeo apparently made a real impression on Anneliese as she kept talking about the men "grabbing and tying up the baby cows."  Liz and I left the kids for a trip to Mackinac Island where we ate dinner at the famous Grand Hotel, the world's largest summer hotel.  While impressive, it was a little creepy how each service role at the hotel was filled by a different race.  We had a great bike ride around the beautiful island.  Driving between locales, we hit the Tunnel of Trees on Highway 119.

Along the whole trip, we've never seen so many strange large plastic animal/character statues (e.g., moose painted like American flag) so we took pictures next to them all.  We kept driving north up to Paradise, MI to see Tahquamenon Falls where we did some enjoyable hiking.  We stayed the night at the Whitefish Point lighthouse, home of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum which was quaint but funny because all artwork on the walls were shipwreck themed...not exactly uplifting.  Dining options in town were a bit limited and we ended up eating at the Red Flannel Saloon twice!  Grandma and John were also able to swing into town for a visit with the kids.

Ethan's Birthday Pool Party

We finally held a birthday party for Ethan and went for the pool party theme again.  The weather had been less than hot (normally holds off until late August) but the sun at least came out.  The highlight was testing out the inflatable slide we purchased for the same price as a rental.  No idea how many uses we'll get out of it before it breaks but I figured I was breaking even after one use so who cares.

Habitat for Humanity

At my suggestion, my church signed up for its first Habitat for Humanity project.  It was similar to the other time I'd volunteered in that it was for their Brush with Kindness program where they just fix up an existing home (doesn't surprise me given there isn't much land affordable land anywhere close).  My pastor and I were dumb enough to volunteer for running electrical in the attack which wasn't too bad until the sun started to turn it into an oven in the afternoon.

Stroller Strides Day at the Beach

We had a Stroller Strides beach party which was fun.  We attempted another sand castle and this one was equally tall.  This sand at this beach is very easy to use.  I brought out my improvised castle mold made from a tub with the bottom cut out.

Disney California Adventure

We went to Disney California Adventure this weekend. Thankfully Ethan was able to recover from our questionable parenting decision to put him on the Hollywood Tower of Terror as his very first ride in the part. He was pretty much ready to go home after that.

Moving to Monterey for a Year!

I found out that I was selected as Boeing's candidate to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA for a year to get a Master's degree in Astronautical Engineering.  I couldn't be happier being given the opportunity to get my masters degree full time which effectively means I don't have to miss out on time with my family to get an education.  Although we're a bit frazzled with the prospects of finding a place to live and how everyone will adjust, we are all excited.

Ethan Practicing Writing

Here's an interesting example of Ethan's writing practice: Diaper Griffen Party.  Griffen is the boy down the street and we can only hope those three words are unrelated.

Ethan Turns 5!!!

Happy birthday Ethan!  Ethan got some Lego sets including a 20+ pound bag of scrap pieces which should stimulate his creativity given the lack of any provided instructions for designs.

Beach Day

We went to a party at the "beach" (really a harbor) and had a great time.  Lots of kids helped out with my sand castle, Ethan attempted skim boarding and made Liz pull him around on a goodie board.

4th of July Bike Parade

Ethan and I at the last minute elected to participate in The Great American 4th of July Kids Bike Parade in Long Beach.  We were definitely lacking in the decorations department (see examples here) and the weather wasn't fantastic but it was fun.

The Chomper Monster is Back

Anneliese has taken over the tradition that was once Ethan's of warning me to look out for the Chomper Monster each morning as I head out the door to my car.  It's very cute.

Anneliese has also picked up another gem from mommy:

"Are you serious?" --Anneliese

Father's Day Minigolf

For some reason I decided that for Father's Day I wanted to take the family miniature golfing for the first time. What could possibly go wrong with a five and two year old, right? Other than chasing them around a bit, nobody got hurt. Ethan impressed by making it into a windmill on one shot!

Ethan Scores a Goal

In the waning minutes of a controversial soccer scrimmage, shortly after the purple team's only goal had been nullified due to it being scored after an out of bounds by the same team, Ethan ended up breaking the 0-0 tie by scoring the only goal as time expired!  Looking at this photo I'm not sure why all these purple jerseys were sitting around but credit Ethan for navigating through 'em and getting the goal.

Ethan Graduates! (to kindergarten)

Ethan graduated with the Long Beach Christian Daycare Sunshine class of 2011.  As usual, they did a performance with fun songs.  Ethan had to tend to some nasal hygene during the performance.

Laundry Machine Debacle

Well, our front loader washer died a horrible death and it turns out it was premeditated murder. After much web research, I've discovered that the stainless steel drum and the aluminum spider bracket are known to be corrosive with water and detergent. What a lame thing for a manufacturer to do. After luckily finding and emailing someone who actually cares at the company, I was able to get a decent repair deal. I took the liberty of degreasing and painting the new spider bracket with engine block primer and sealer in hopes of making this one last longer. Sure smells like a class action suit to me.

Black Tie Wedding

I was invited to a coworker's wedding that was incredibly fancy. His fiancee, Shane McCoy is from a pretty famous family. Here's an article from Sept 21, 1981 edition of People Magazine on the family.  The father was Nancy Reagan's chief of staff and his wife is a great granddaughter of oil baron Edward Doheny.  The church and reception site had full grown trees put inside.  It was a great time!

Angel's Game

I received four reward tickets from work to an Los Angeles Angel's of Anaheim (or whatever they're called) baseball game and decided to invite a neighbor and his boy instead of braving the outing with Anneliese.  We made it through seven innings and saw some pretty good grabs but just one post-homerun fireworks display.  My $9 'brat' with onions was pretty good too.

Audi gets hit while parked in front of house

While drying off the kids from their bath around 8pm, I thought I heard a car crash out on the big street adjacent to ours.  Half a minute later, I heard an engine rev and tires squeal on our street and another crash sound.  I went outside to check things out and check on the Audi to unfortunately find that it had been struck on the corner and the rear tire toed in.  Police cars were quick to respond and were yelling at someone to "Get down on the ground!".  There was a hesterical girl near the incident as well.

From all we've heard that night from the officers as well as some info from our neighbor who is a district attorney, the driver peeled away from a house on a nearby street, intixicated to the tune of a 0.23, and immediately crashed out on the bigger street.  From there, he went up onto someones yard, backed up, floored it with squealing tires into my car, down the block missing everything else until he went up onto someone elses yard breaking off one of his front suspension and skidding to a stop.  The hysterical girl we believe was a girlfriend related to the driver.  The cops said there was no lengthy pursuit and just happened to be in the area.

The stinker of it all is that because the suspension got hit, that pushed the damaged to over $7k leading the insurance company to say that the car is a total loss which is pretty hard to wrap your head around when you look at the photo.  I had just fixed many annoyances and done the 90k mile timing belt/water pump service having committed to keeping the car until it died.  I'm now driving our '97 Ford Escort that has been my at-work car until I figure out what to do with the $9k check I got for the car.  Lame.

Anneliese Turns Two!

We had a great time with visits from all three sets of grandparents at various times to celebrate Anneliese's birthday.  As usual, she is totally set for clothes for some time.

A few weeks ago, she went for her two-year checkup and the stats are in: 24.5 lbs (20th percentile), 32" (8th percentile) but a 19" head (85th percentile)!  The craziest part is looking at the growth charts in their room, she's about as tall and heavy at two as Ethan was at one!  The visit concluded with some shots.  After crying for a bit, she uttered with her lower lip pouting, "I want stickers."  Her vocab continues to skyrocket and she's linking four or more words frequently.  She says "sorry" a lot, especially after she's bit or pulled Ethan's hair.  She also can repeat almost any word such as "awesome" but unfortunately that includes learning the S-word from Mommy.  When she drops something and says "Oh s__t" Liz has a hard time not smiling and just ignoring it.

Click here or the album for more photos from our whirlwind April!

Soccer Resumes

So Ethan's back in soccer but he still drags his feet and mopes beforehand every time.  Could be because he doesn't like getting 'schooled' by his coach (see picture).  Actually, I was really proud of Ethan during this shot as he figured out that the smart way to steal the ball was not to follow the mob of kids chasing after the coach but to instead leave the pack and cut the coach off!  He has fun once he's out there but he still just doesn't like being separated from us.
